Program Note

The summer preceding this piece, I had the opportunity to see several authentic paintings by Vincent van Gogh. While I was familiar with his work and stature, already holding him in high regard, I was not prepared for how visceral this experience would be. The colors seemed to illuminate each canvas, like a window open to the fields of Provence. The thick layers of paint rose and fell with a surface like mountains. And the flowers seemed to capture both joy and despair in a single stroke from the palette.

While many artists have succeeded in capturing their personal suffering or their delight through art, Vincent van Gogh transformed his troubled perspective into nothing less than astounding beauty. It is his love of the world despite its flaws which I find most profound; and, which I hope to convey through my own work.
