Program Note

In much of my recent music, I have a noticed an increasingly positive tone. Words like “joyous” and “exuberant” and phrases such as “always forward” and “rising upward” seem to pop up naturally throughout the scores. I think these recurring ideas reflect my own ongoing search for inspiration. Yes, inspiration in topic, but, more importantly, the inspiration to keep trying. This message, among others, is really what recurs the most in my music. I hope to tell stories that remind us of the light even when things seem exceedingly dark; there is always something or someone that guides us forward.

I have been lucky to have so many mentors in my life. The most impactful, however, were those whose deep excitement and love for music was infectious. These individuals, including teachers, friends, and even students, have energized me as I chase a rather unpredictable career. Commissioned by the Walnut Hills High School Wind Ensemble, Guiding Light celebrates this experience. It captures the constant momentum and the spilling-over of excitement that accompanies great inspiration. While the work passes through a variety of moods and, at times, seems to spin out of control, a path is always found. A path illuminated by the effervescent guidance of others.
