Program Note

While visiting the Cincinnati Art Museum, I was drawn to a painting by E. T. Hurley. His Garfield Park captures a local square shrouded in a thick snowfall. There are several figures in the haze, but only as impressions. I was struck by the way these silhouettes seemed to come in and out of focus. Somehow, they were simultaneously in motion and still.

In Silhouettes, I aim to capture and explore this characteristic. There are several motifs which emerge from a thick, blanketing texture, and gradually increase in clarity and intention. A hymn is heard distantly, floating through the haze from an obscured church steeple. This hymn grows louder and more resonant, as if we’re approaching the church, yet it is always in dialogue with the other figures in the scene.

This work is not literal in its narrative, rather it explores the characteristics of each silhouette. Some seem to dredge forward, some stand in silence, and others extend an intriguing invitation. In the end, it is curious which silhouettes escape the haze and command our attention.
